Beetroot

Pectin - a fibre found in beetroot - helps the body flush toxins out of the system. Beetroot is also packed with antioxidants including betaine, which helps the liver get rid of toxins and helps protect the liver and bile ducts.

Alternatives: spinach and quinoa are also high in betaine.

Oatmeal

Oatmeal is a great source of soluble fibre, which binds to toxins in the digestive tract, helping the body remove them before they reach the liver. Oatmeal is also low GI, which can help reduce fat storage in the liver - research published in the journal Obesity found that those on a high-GI diet had twice the normal amount of fat in their bodies, blood and livers.

Alternatives: breads and pastas made from wholegrains, beans, barley and bran.

Green tea

Green tea contains polyphenols known as catechins, which boost liver function and help reduce fat storage in the liver. Just don't go crazy - high doses of green tea extract can have the opposite effect, causing liver damage.

Description: Green tea contains a potent plant nutrient known as epigallocatechin gallate, or EGCG, for short.

Green tea contains a potent plant nutrient known as epigallocatechin gallate, or EGCG, for short.

Alternatives: cocoa, blackberries, black grapes and cherries also contain catechins.

Seafood

Seafood such as tuna and prawns are a good source of the dietary mineral selenium. Selenium plays a key role in liver function and is needed for the liver to convert thyroid hormones - which all cells in the body need to function properly - into the right form.

Alternatives: Brazil nuts, turkey, chicken.

Soy milk

Research from the University of Illinois, US, found that soy protein may help reduce the build-up of fat in the liver. The researchers believe that soy protein appears to help repair a key signalling pathway in the liver involved in fat metabolism, making it harder for the liver to become a “dumping ground” for fat.

Alternatives: tofu and edamame.
