Bono, frontman of Irish rock group U2, says he may never play guitar again after a cycling accident last year.

In a blog on the group's website last Friday, the 54-year-old said he broke his hand, shoulder, elbow and face during the accident in New York's Central Park. He was attempting to avoid another cyclist, but he said he could not blame the accident on anyone but himself.

"Recovery has been more difficult than I thought," he said in the message from his home in Dublin. "As I write this, it is not clear that I will ever play guitar again. The band have reminded me that neither they nor Western civilisation are depending on this."

His arm was shattered in six places. Doctors inserted three metal plates and 18 screws to repair the injury. He required hours of surgery and has had extensive therapy. But he is expected to make a full recovery.

His 6,000-word message is an A-to-Z summary of his year's highlights, with X represented by an X-ray of his new titanium elbow.

Despite the physical injuries he sustained, the more serious damage was to his ego, he said. "The real injury this year was to my Irish pride as it was discovered that under my tracksuit, I was wearing yellow and black Lycra cycling shorts," he wrote. "Yes, LYCRA. This is not very rock 'n' roll."

But he said: "I blanked out on impact and have no memory of how I ended up in New York Presbyterian with my humerus bone sticking through my leather jacket. Very punk rock as injuries go."

He said he cancelled all public appearances and communications for the first part of the year to prepare for the next U2 tour. The band's next scheduled concert is a sold-out show on May 14 in Vancouver.
