Sherlock star Benedict Cumberbatch pulled off a private wedding with his pregnant fiancee Sophie Hunter on Valentine's Day on the Isle of Wight, off the south coast of England, said the British media.

Cumberbatch, 38, married theatre director Hunter, 36, last Saturday afternoon at a ceremony attended by close friends and family at the 12th-century St Peter & St Paul Church, said The Telegraph.

The bride was shielded from cameras by security officers holding umbrellas as she entered the church at 3.20pm.

About 45 minutes later, photographers snapped the couple leaving the ceremony in a classic grey Jaguar car.

But many fans waiting in the rain for a glimpse of the newlyweds were left disappointed.

A white van was parked by security in the way of the spectators, blocking their view.

Guests included actors Tom Hiddlestone and Andrew Scott, who plays Cumberbatch's arch enemy, Moriarty, in BBC's popular adaptation of the Sherlock Holmes novels, said The Telegraph.

According to the media, actors including Keira Knightley and Martin Freeman, a Sherlock co-star, had been expected to join the celebrations.

The ceremony was followed by a reception across the road at Mottistone Manor.

The couple, who filmed 2009's Burlesque Fairytales together, announced their engagement in The Times' births, deaths and marriages page in November last year.

Last month, they said they were expecting their first child.

Cumberbatch has been nominated for an Oscar for his role as World War II codebreaker Alan Turing in The Imitation Game. He is working on a new season of Sherlock.
