Johnny Depp set Twittersphere on fire after slurring through an expletive-laden speech at the Hollywood Film Awards last Friday.

Fans were tickled and others offended after the actor went onstage to present the Hollywood Documentary Award to talent manager Shep Gordon, the subject of Mike Myers' documentary Super- mensch: The Legend Of Shep Gordon.

"That's the weirdest mic I've ever seen in my life," Depp started off by saying. "I'm not very good at this kind of thing."

Stumbling over his words, Depp, 51, said he would read off the teleprompter, but continued with his expletives which were bleeped out before he was cut off by a film package, said reports.

"It was very rock and roll," Myers commented backstage, as reported by USA Today.

Fans agreed, with some comparing Depp to Jack Sparrow, his swaggering Pirates Of The Caribbean character. One wrote, "Sorry kids, (Depp) at his worst is still... awesome!"

But another user warned him, "Johnny Depp, you're about to become an Internet meme."

And actor Rob Lowe commented via Twitter, "I find the whole unprepared... possibly wasted artist persona really, really unexciting."

Benedict Cumberbatch was named Best Actor for playing codebreaker Alan Turing in Imitation Game and Julianne Moore took Best Actress for Still Alice, about a woman fighting Alzheimer's Disease, at the ceremony at the Palladium theatre in Hollywood. Best Film was the Ben Affleck thriller Gone Girl. Chinese actress Jing Tian received a Hollywood International award.

Top stars including Angelina Jolie, Affleck, Robert Downey Jr, Jennifer Lopez, Reese Witherspoon and Kristen Stewart were at the event, aired for the first time by CBS and trademarked as "the official launch of the awards season".

A "top-secret committee" of supposed industry experts vote on its awards, said The Washington Post.
