The ageing nitwits of Dumb And Dumber To, a sequel 20 years in the making, defeated the Big Hero 6 kids to win the North American weekend box- office race.

Costing roughly US$40 million (S$52 million) to make, Dumb And Dumber To by Universal Pictures took in an estimated US$38.1 million at North American theatres, for a worldwide total of US$47 million, according to Rentrak, which compiles ticketing data.

Universal successfully hit the nostalgia button, turning out fans of the 1994 instalment, Dumb And Dumber, and benefited from a savvy release window: There has not been a broad studio comedy in the marketplace since August. Dumb And Dumber To did better than most analysts had predicted, giving a much-needed boost to the film careers of its stars, Jim Carrey and Jeff Daniels, and its directors, Bobby and Peter Farrelly.

Dumb And Dumber was among 1994's biggest hits, with US$247.3 million in worldwide ticket sales.

Big Hero 6 by Walt Disney Studios ended up in second place, taking in about US$36 million for a worldwide total of US$148.4 million.

Disney said the animated film helped propel the studio's strong year at the box office. Last Friday, it surpassed US$4 billion in global ticket sales for the second time in its history.
