The daughter of pop superstar Whitney Houston was found unresponsive in a bathtub at her home outside Atlanta last Saturday morning and taken to a hospital in an eerie echo of Houston's death nearly three years ago.

Entertainment news website TMZ.com reported sources close to the family as saying Bobbi Kristina Brown, 21, the daughter of Houston and singer Bobby Brown, had been placed in a medically induced coma to address swelling in the brain.

Brown was found at about 10.20am by her husband and a friend at her home in a gated community in Roswell, a suburb north of Atlanta, the police said. They called 911 and began CPR.

A police officer took over "life-saving measures" and an ambulance took Brown to North Fulton Hospital in Roswell, said a police spokesman. The spokesman said she did not know Brown's condition or whether she would survive.

Officers were at the home last Saturday investigating the episode, the spokesman said.

"Please keep her and the family in your thoughts and prayers," the police posted on Facebook. A hospital spokesman said she could not confirm any information about Brown.

Houston drowned in a bathtub in a suite at the Beverly Hilton hotel in Beverly Hills, California, on Feb 11, 2012, at age 48. The authorities determined that cocaine use and heart disease contributed to her death.

She and Bobby Brown had a turbulent marriage that was depicted in a recent biopic, Whitney, that aired on cable channel Lifetime. They struggled with substance abuse and she described their 15-year marriage, which ended in 2007, as drug- and alcohol-fuelled. He was sentenced to 55 days in jail in 2013 after admitting to drink driving in 2012.

Their daughter made headlines in recent years for her relationship with her husband of one year, Nick Gordon, a family friend who has said Houston was like a mother to him.

Gordon was raised for a time by Houston, but in response to criticism that the pair were raised as siblings, Bobbi Brown said Houston had never adopted Gordon. On Houston's birthday last year, Gordon had his arm tattooed with a portrait of her. After her mother's death, Brown had a reality show on Lifetime in 2012 called The Houstons: On Our Own, which also featured Houston's mother, gospel singer Cissy Houston, and Gordon. Brown's Twitter feed over the past year included motivations to work out, quotes from celebrities on being true to oneself, loving messages for her husband and remembrances of her mother.
