If you hate New Year's Eve which is today, you have company.

The host of the HBO series Last Week Tonight, John Oliver, has posted a video on YouTube to say how stressful and miserable the last day of a year is.

"New Year's Eve is like the death of a pet," he says. "You know it's going to happen, but somehow you're never truly prepared for how awful it is.

"New Year's Eve is the worst. It combines three of the least pleasant things known to mankind: Forced interaction with strangers, being drunk, cold and tired and having to stare at Ryan Seacrest for five solid minutes, waiting for him to tell you what the time is," referring to the host of the annual New Year's Eve Times Square event which ushers in the new year.

"Do you really want to sit on your friends' sofa and watch hummus turn brown all night?" he also asks, saying finally what many secretly think of the parties and gatherings they find themselves at on Dec 31.

The best thing to do, he says, is to avoid the parties, which he says is "a five-hour commitment if you leave at 12:01".

He recommends coming up with excuses such as saying your cousin is sick or simply saying you are doing a cleanse, as "there will be no follow-up questions, because nobody wants to hear about" it, he says.

The video is a special Web segment of his show Last Week Tonight With John Oliver, which is on hiatus.

The British comic started hosting the late-night satirical news show after gaining popularity as a writer and guest host on The Daily Show With Jon Stewart.
