Me And Earl And The Dying Girl, a whimsical cancer tearjerker that was glowingly reviewed and set off a bidding war, won the top prize at the Sundance Film Festival last Saturday.

The drama by Alfonso Gomez-Rejon took the US Dramatic Grand Jury Prize at the end of a two-hour ceremony in the Utah mountain resort Park City. It also won the US Dramatic Audience Award.

The "me" in the title is a high school cinephile, Greg (Thomas Mann), who makes humorous no-budget movie knockoffs with his only friend, Earl (RJ Cyler), and whose mother forces him to do a good deed by spending time with a student, Rachel (Olivia Cooke), who has just learnt she has leukaemia.

Sundance winners regularly go on to awards success. Last year's top winner, Whiplash, was nominated for Best Picture at this year's Oscars.

On Saturday, the US Dramatic Directing Award went to Robert Eggers for his horror movie The Witch.

The Wolfpack by Crystal Moselle, which follows six brothers who spent most of their lives locked up in an apartment, took the US Documentary Grand Jury Prize. The Directing Award went to Matthew Heineman for Cartel Land, about drug wars in Mexico.

The World Cinema Grand Jury Prize went to Slow West by Scottish film-maker John Maclean, which follows a teenager on a journey across 19th-century frontier America in search of the woman he loves.

The World Documentary Grand Jury Prize was given to The Russian Woodpecker, which takes a stab at Russian President Vladimir Putin in a story about the revolution in Ukraine and the 1986 Chernobyl nuclear disaster.
