Tumble leaves Madonna with 'bit of a whiplash'

Madonna said that she suffered the whiplash injury when she was drawn by her course, involving it to fall and strike her head during a representation with the Brit Awards last week.

The 56-year-old pop star said during last Thursday's taping of The Jonathan Ross Show on Britain's ITV that her gasp-inducing plunge was a little cosmic comeuppance and not a publicity stunt.

“I did not wound my end, I wounded my head. I can fall, I fell my horse much from time. I tucked and I have good core strength," she said in an episode of the show that will air on March 14.

"But the thing is, I had a little bit of a whiplash and I smacked the back of my head, so there was a man standing over me with a flashlight until about 3am making sure I was still compos mentis", or of sound mind, she added.

It carried out its new song, alive for the love, with the British rewards of music last Wednesday when it did not detach the course of its costume of matador before its dancers drew aside it.

She blamed the tumble on a change to her performance between rehearsal and show time, which meant her cape had to be tied more tightly around her neck.

"So here I am marching in like the queen and I got to the top of the stairs and I pulled my silky string and it did not come undone," she said. "My two lovely Japanese dancers basically strangled me off the stage. I had a choice - I could either be strangled or fall with the cape, and I fell."

A little dazed, she rose to her feet before finishing the song, which was peppered with lines such as "I'm not giving up, I'm gonna carry on" and "Lifted me up and watched me stumble".

"I'm never writing lyrics like that again," she joked.

The fall overshadowed the awards and the video of the plunge immediately circulated online.

"Honestly the universe was, I don't know, trying to teach me a lesson I guess. I don't know," she said.

Despite her dignified recovery, she refused to watch the video of the incident. When discussing future performances, she said "cape fear is over" and that she was dumping the floor-sweeping garment.

"I rehearse and I rehearse and I rehearse so when I do the show it's effortless and I create magic, and I did the opposite. I actually created a horror show for everyone," she said.
